| About SARS in the Philippines. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is an atypical pneumonia or a respiratory disease. It was first recognized on February 26, 2003 in Hanoi, Vietnam but there are reports that it was originated in mainland China in 2003. Its symptoms and signs include cough, shortness of breath or breathing difficulties, and high fever (greater than 38 degrees C).
In 2003, the Department of Health (DOH) has reported a total of 12 probable SARS cases in the Philippines to the World Health Organizations (WHO). However, only 2 cases of death were reported.
20 days after the last detection of probable SARS case in April 30, 2003, the WHO has removed the Philippines from its list of areas with recent local transmission of SARS.
