According to the year 2000 health statistics of the Department of Health, diseases of the heart is the number one cause of mortality in the Philippines which account to almost 16.5 percent and 56. 86% of those are male. This is followed by diseases of the vascular system, 13.2%; Malignant Neoplasm, 9.9 %; pneumonia, 8.9%; accidents, 8.8%; tuberculosis in all forms, 7.5%; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and allied conditions, 4.3%; certain conditions originating in the perinatal period, 4.1%; Diabetes Mellitus, 2.9%; and Nephritis, nephritic syndrome and nephrosis, 2.2%.
