| About AIDS in the Philippines. From January 1984 to July 2005, there were 2,314 HIV Ab seropositive cases reported to the Department of Health (DOH), of which 1,624 (70%) were asymptomatic and 688 (30%) were AIDS cases. Sixty four percent (64%) of those were males. Sexual intercourse (85%) was still the leading mode of transmission of the disease. Of the AIDS cases, 268 (42%) were already dead due to AIDS related complications.
Of the 2,314 HIV cases, 775 (34%) were Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs, of which, 275 (36%) were seafarers. Among types of sexual intercourse, heterosexual contact (1,442 cases) is the leading mode of transmission, followed by homosexual contact (406 cases) and bisexual contact (124 cases).
As of July 2005, there are 114 HIV cases for year 2005 were reported, 105 are asymptomatic and 9 are AIDS cases. There are 4 cases of death due to AIDS related complications reported for year 2005.
